A work of contrast,
invaded by dust and flooded with light.
Here we dance our life and maybe yours.
Despite the fact that it is usually later in their career that dancers turn toward the art of choreography, very early on Philippe Tréhet knew he wanted to choreograph. After studying in New York, an experience considered somewhat essential in the mid-eighties, Philippe Tréhet returned to Le Havre in order to set up his own company. A succession of works gained him not only numerous awards from the most important dance festivals but also earned the company international recognition.
A reflection on the double theme of femininity-masculinity, “Les Vitalités Obscures”* takes a deep look at the inner disorder existing within each of the sexes; two psychological universes that the choreographer has chosen to describe, first separately, then together in a final meeting of the two. First the men are revealed in their solitude and their nakedness, prisoners of contradictions, from which they struggle to break free in a warrior-like dance of astonishing strength. Then the women enter on stage, spilling over with violence, rapid and disordered, unable to control their sentiments, to master their emotions. From the whole emerges a feeling, poetic and Romanesque, recalling at one moment the cruelty of Genet, at another the flamboyant romanticism of Pushkin whose influence on this work can be distinctly felt.
Rich in symbolism and metaphors, the work impresses by its purity of style, its richness and precision of movement. The dancers organise themselves into a visual symphony, the movements interweaving, interpenetrating. In a final act, when the darkness has finally lifted, man and woman collide. And so begins the marriage, with its innumerable colours, the apotheosis, humanity refound...
