Philippe Trehet Choreographer
Born in Le Havre, June 4 1966, Philippe Tréhet has never really abandoned his native city, something of a paradox for this eager young man who at the age of sixteen, on establishing contact with Jacqueline Finnaert and Peter Goss, left Le Havre to pursue work in Paris. In 1984 he departed for New York where he studied the techniques of Graham and Limon and received instruction under Alvin Nikolaïs. Having spent one year in the United States, he returned home to France, determined to realize his own ambitions as a choreographer. In Le Havre he set up his company and opened a studio, a place in which to teach and publicly present his first pieces.
Participation in several important dance festivals soon earned him a series of notable awards and drew international interest in his work. In 1988 the Concours Chorégraphique de Turin and the Rencontres de Tignes awarded him respectively, the Prix Spécial du Jury and Premier Prix Contemporain. In the same year he won the prestigious Grand Prix Spécial du Jury at the Concours International de Paris for two solos “Trouble” and “Désirs Désertés” (Deserted Desires) and the following year, his ten minute piece “Requiem”, which later evolved into the large scale three-act work “Une Ville Peut Mourir” (A Town Can Die) won him the International Groningen Dance Competition. Already an ambitious piece in itself, “Requiem” gained him considerable recognition and in 1991 he was commissioned to create a new work by the National Conservatoire of Music and Dance of Lyon, (CNSMD). The next year, as well as creating two new works for the Jeune Ballet de France, he was selected to participate in the Aix-en-Provence Dance Festival. The year of 1993 saw his winning of the first prize in the Tokyo International Choreography Competition and the completion of his trilogy with a final work entitled “Les Mystères d’un Nouveau Monde” (The Mysteries of a New World).
Sought after by companies around the world, Philippe Tréhet has created works for Nederlands Dans Theater, the Swiss based company Nomades, the San Francisco Ballet, the Warsaw Opera, the Bat Dor Dance Company of Israel and the National Opera of Mexico.
It is not only the style and the quality of Philippe Tréhet’s work that explains this extensive contact with the rest of the dance world, but also his way of working, the accessibility and the generosity he shares with each company and establishment with which he creates ties.
He has created more than fifty works and from 1999 until 2003 he held the position of associated artist at the National Theatre of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. 2001 marked a non-stop year in which he choreographed six new works for the Ballet de l’Opéra National du Rhin, the Nederlands Dans Theater, the Ballet Contemporaneo de Caracas, the Channel Islands Ballet of Los Angeles and his own company and in 2002, Philippe Tréhet consecrated himself solely to the creation and rehearsal of his work “Hom E”. The beginning of 2003 gave rise to numerous projects in connection with the Department of Yvelines as well as the creation of “Quatre Etages” (Four Floors) and the recreation of “Le Jardin du Silence” (The Garden of Silence). January 2004 was the premiere of “Le Prince de Bois” (The Wooden Prince) restaged by Philippe Tréhet for 28 dancers of the National Opera of Strasbourg to the musical score of Bélà Bartok. His company will be on tour in France during the months of February, March and April and later on, new projects await the company in France and overseas.
